Excellence, Aspiration, Inclusion, Respect

At Brixworth Primary School, learning is planned in a cross-curricular way ensuring that children can make connections between English and other areas of the curriculum. Lessons are designed to challenge all pupils throughout with many opportunities for teachers and students to assess the learning taking place. Pupils cover a wide variety of topics and we aim for learning to be: a memorable experience, be hands on, taught within an immersive learning environment and to have cross- curricular links. All of this learning is brought to life through many hands on experiences such as visits, WOW days and Fabulous Finishes in school.

Details of Home Learning

Year 3/4 Home Learning expectations are as follows:

Spellings - Weekly spelling tests for all children (spellings sent home the week before) – Mrs Barber - Thursday. All other classes - Fridays

Reading - Daily home reading recorded in home/school message books.

Alongside the above, all children have a list of 15 activities. These activities will give children a range of different life lessons including being outdoors, therefore allowing them to experience the wonders of nature and giving them the chance to explore, face challenges and learn from these.

Here they develop their whole self, supporting our vision of ‘Being the best that you can be’. It is our hope that these activities will continue to give children the positive experiences of the outdoors combined with academic activities too. Where families have more than one child in the school, it is hoped the family will enjoy doing the activities together.

Children are to choose 10 activities to complete over each term. Also, there is an option for a family choice of activity and a child choice of activity. Children’s home learning books only need to be handed in on 3 occasions each term. These dates will be communicated to parents at the start of each term.

Please ensure that children have a suitable PE kit at all times, for indoor PE this is shorts and t-shirt, and that they remove all jewellery for these lessons.  We expect all children to be able to remove their own jewellery (including earrings) by themselves and long hair must be tied up.

Year 4 Times Table Test

This is a new test that will begin for all schools in June 2020. The online test is aimed at assessing children’s quick recall of times tables facts up to 12x12. TT Rockstars is used in some maths lessons and as home learning to help children prepare for this.

Key information:

Each class will hold an assembly once throughout the year. The assembly will take place 9.10-9.30am approx. Parents are invited to come in and watch the assembly and are also given the opportunity to visit their child’s class during the year for 30 minutes to watch a lesson being taught.

During the week before the October half term, there is an opportunity for Year 4 children to experience a 3 day, 2 night residential at Beaumanor Hall in Leicestershire. Activities include topic linked learning and teamwork challenges.

How you can help

Parents can support their children's learning through, good attendance (above 96%), being punctual, practising spellings and times tables, reading, and discussing the books daily. Also by giving children the opportunity to visit the local library to read about and research our topics.

If you would like to discuss how you could help your child at home, please see your child's class teacher. We welcome parental involvement in the life of our school.

If you have any questions about our years 3/4 phase please do not hesitate to make an appointment with our phase leader Mr Langford.
