“On Friday 8th May, Miss Duckworth, Miss Warren and 6 children went to the University of Northampton for a vehicle engineering celebration event. In school, we built remote control cars and in Key Stage One they had made push along ones too! To build the vehicles we had to measure and cut the wood with a saw. We added the wheels, gearbox and axle. Once we had cut all the parts, we needed to assemble them. We found connecting the wires to the motor very fiddly and tricky! Eventually, we had connected all the parts, and our vehicles were working! When we arrived at the University, we went to the creative hub where there were lots of other schools. We had to complete different activities to test our vehicles. We had to drive the vehicle up the ramp which was very difficult because the wooden wheels kept spinning and we needed more grip, so we added elastic bands to the wheels. We had to adjust our vehicles and not give up when they went wrong. We also had to test the straight-line speed, and our vehicle was very quick. The children in Key Stage 1 also tested their vehicles. They held them at the top of the ramp and released them. The vehicle that went the furthest and in the straightest line was awarded the most points. They won! There was also an interview panel who we had to speak to about our vehicle design and how well we made it, the parts we struggled with and how we overcame them. At the end, there was an awards ceremony to celebrate everyone’s achievements and hard work. It was an amazing day, and it was lots of fun to see everyone’s vehicles, and it has inspired us to go to university one day!”
