Sports & PE

Our Vision for Sports & PE at Brixworth Primary School

At Brixworth, we believe that Physical Education and sport are an essential part of every child’s education and personal development. The Physical Bee is a key element of our school vision, encouraging every child to strive to be the very best they can be physically. We want our pupils to leave Brixworth with the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm needed to lead active, healthy lifestyles long into the future.

We are committed to providing high-quality PE for all children, with the aim of inspiring a lifelong love of physical activity. Striving to achieve personal bests is central to our lessons and reflects our core school values. We encourage children to challenge themselves, set achievable next steps and take pride in their progress and accomplishments.

Over the past year, our approach to PE and sport has continued to have a significant impact on pupils’ attainment, enjoyment and overall wellbeing, as well as supporting staff development and engagement.

School Games Platinum Award - We are extremely proud to have achieved the Platinum School Games Award for the past four consecutive years. Platinum is the highest level of recognition available and reflects our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality sporting opportunities for all pupils. This award recognises the meaningful impact that PE and sport have across our school and celebrates our status as an actively engaged school.

Sporting Opportunities for All - We work hard to provide a wide range of sports clubs, available before school, lunchtime and after school. These opportunities are open to children of all abilities and encourage the development of perseverance, teamwork and communication skills. Our clubs would not be possible without the dedication of our staff, who generously give their time to support and inspire our pupils. The clubs vary throughout the year, often linking to local competitions and seasonal sporting events. The details of these clubs can be found in our weekly newsletter, Primary Word.

Developing Strong Community Links - We are proud to work closely with a range of local clubs and professional organisations to broaden our pupils’ sporting experiences and strengthen links within our community. These partnerships provide high-quality coaching, pathways into local sport and opportunities for children to continue their participation beyond school.

We work with: Northampton Saints, GLK Gymnastics, British Gymnastics, Hotshots, Freestyle, Bounce Beyond Leicester, Northampton Hockey, Brixworth Cricket Club, Brixworth Tennis Club, Onyourmarks Athletics Coaching and Dancing Schools UK.  These links help us to enrich our curriculum, inspire pupils through specialist coaching and create clear pathways into community sport. By fostering these relationships, we aim to build a lasting culture of participation and strengthen our role within the wider sporting community.

Supporting Wellbeing Through Sport - We recognise that sport plays a vital role in supporting both the physical and mental wellbeing of our pupils and staff. Promoting positive mental health, resilience and confidence is central to our PE curriculum and extra-curricular provision.

We are continually developing our approach to ensure that PE and sport contribute meaningfully to the health, happiness and overall wellbeing of our whole school community.

Dance

Dance is a key concept within PE and the National Curriculum. We offer dance clubs that support children in developing their physical skills, creativity and confidence while staying active and having fun. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to stay active, make new friends and enjoy the excitement of performing while developing their love of dance. Pupils enjoy learning new routines, working as a team and performing in front of an audience.

At Brixworth Primary School, there is a variety of dance groups with a wide range of dance styles and abilities. Making sure every child has the opportunity to participate and to perform.

Brixworth Elite Dance Team is a fun, energetic club run by Miss Rigby and Mrs Varrier. This club gives children the opportunity to build confidence, develop coordination and express themselves through dance in a supportive and encouraging environment. They have taken part in a range of exciting competitions and experiences including:

  • The Great Big Dance Off - Regional heats in Nottingham Albert Hall
  • NMPAT festival of cultural arts, performing at the Royal & Derngate Theatre
  • Community links with Northampton School performances
  • Community links with Northampton College performances and dance workshops

Brixworth Dance KS1 & KS2 Groups have the opportunities to perform at multiple events throughout the year:

  • The Summer Concert
  • The PTA Summer Fete
  • The PTA Winter Fete

Brixworth Strictly Dance Teams compete in Dancing Schools UK. These teams have the opportunity to learn a Ballroom and a Latin dance. We have two competitive teams in Years 3 and 4 and two competitive teams in Years 1 and 2. These are called Razzle & Dazzle and Sparkle & Shine.

  • Years 3 and 4 will compete in March 2026 at the Spinney Hill Theatre
  • Years 1 and 2 will compete in May 2026 at the Spinney Hill Theatre
  • We hope to introduce Year 5 and 6 teams later in the year
