Sports Premium

Primary PE and Sport Premium

In March 2013, the Government introduced the Primary PE and Sport Premium to improve the quality of Physical Education (PE), physical activity and sport in primary schools. Each primary school in England receives £16,000 plus an additional £10 per pupil in Years 1 to 6.

This funding is ring-fenced, meaning it can only be used to improve PE, physical activity and sport in primary schools. The Headteacher, PE Lead and Governing Body are responsible for ensuring that the funding is used effectively and has a positive impact on pupils.

Schools can decide how best to use the funding to meet the needs of their children. However, it must be used to make additional and sustainable improvements to PE and sport provision, helping pupils to develop healthy, active lifestyles both now and in the future.

The funding is intended to:

  • Increase pupils’ engagement in regular physical activity (with a goal of at least 60 minutes per day, including 30 minutes in school).
  • Raise the profile of PE and sport across the whole school.
  • Improve staff confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE.
  • Broaden the range of sports and activities available to pupils.
  • Increase participation in competitive sport.
