Yr 3 & 4 English Learning

In our History lessons in year 3, we have been learning about Ancient Greece, and this week we focused on the Battle of Marathon. We have discovered what happened during this important battle between the Greeks and the Persians and explored why it was such a significant event in history.

Through our lessons, the children have been developing their historical skills by using evidence, asking questions, ordering events chronologically and considering why events were important. They have particularly enjoyed learning about the famous story of the messenger who ran from Marathon to Athens to share the news of the Greek victory – a story that is linked to the origins of the modern marathon race!

It has been wonderful to see the children becoming increasingly curious about the past and developing their understanding of how events from thousands of years ago can still have an impact on our lives today.

Year 4 have been using the text ‘The Land of Roar’ for their learning in reading and English. They have used their imagination to create their own land. They had to decide what it would look like and what features it would have. We have been improving the way we describe a character from the book using show not tell techniques.

The stars were shimmering and the moon was shining. The wind was blowing the dust across the floor. I heard a creak, I quickly turned, my spine shivered, I stood still. I now had a lump in my throat, Prosecco the rocking horse was swaying gently, I wondered why? I was alert watching for movement all around the room. I felt some movement, it was only a spider, I sighed. I panicked again, I was shaking looking round, biting my lip. I was now shivering in the night air. Stuttering, I walked out of the room.
