Excellence, Aspiration, Inclusion, Respect

At Brixworth Primary School, learning is planned in a cross-curricular way ensuring that children can make connections between English and other areas of the curriculum. Topics are designed to engage the children with a memorable experience at the start, having a marvellous middle and ending with a fabulous finish.

Year 1 builds upon the progress the children have made during their Foundation year and encourages greater independence in subtle ways. In the Autumn term children mainly work in groups having a mixture of adult lead, independent and play based learning. In the spring term there is more emphasis on whole class teaching which prepares the children for life in Year 2.

Year 2 is a very busy final year in Key Stage 1. We continue to add to and build upon the progress that the children have made in Year 1 and we help prepare the children for life in Key Stage 2. Throughout the year pupils are prepared for their end of Key Stage SATs in a positive way by referring to them as Secret Agent Tasks

Details of Home Learning

Year 1 Home Learning -

Spellings/Sound cards – Fridays

Reading - Daily home reading recorded in home/school message books.

Number Bonds.

Year 2 Home learning -

Spellings - Weekly spelling tests for all children (spellings sent home the week before) – Thursdays

Reading - Daily home reading recorded in home/school message books.

Timestables - Weekly on Times Table Rockstars.

Each week children in Year 1 will have phonics to read and spell and children in Year 2 will have weekly spelling rules to learn in their blue spelling book. Children are expected to read, if possible, everyday and record this in the Home School Message book.

Number bonds in Year 1 will be focused on and in Year 2 time tables knowledge will be practised using Times Tables Rockstars. Alongside the above, all children have a list of 15 activities. These activities will give children a range of different life lessons including being outdoors, therefore allowing them to experience the wonders of nature and giving them the chance to explore, face challenges and learn from these. Here they develop their whole self, supporting our vision of ‘Being the best that you can be’. It is our hope that these activities will continue to give children the positive experiences of the outdoors combined with academic activities too. Where families have more than one child in the school, it is hoped the family will enjoy doing the activities together. Children are to choose 10 activities to complete over each term. Also, there is an option for a family choice of activity and a child choice of activity. Children’s home learning books only need to be handed in on 3 occasions each term. These dates will be communicated to parents at the start of each term.

September 2020 Update - At present PE is not required in School.

Please ensure that children have a suitable PE kit at all times and that they remove all jewellery for these lessons.  We expect all children to be able to remove their own jewellery (including earrings) by themselves and long hair must be tied up.

Key information:

Each class will hold an assembly once throughout the year. The assembly will take place 9.10-9.30am approx. Parents are invited to come in and watch the assembly.  Also, each year group will hold an open morning allowing parents to come into school to share and experience methods and teaching, such as Kinetic Letters and Talk for Writing.

Parents can support their children's learning through reading and discussing the books daily, and by giving children the opportunity to visit the local library to read about and research our topics.

If you would like to discuss how you can help your child at home, please see your child's class teacher. We welcome parental involvement in the life of our school.

If you have any questions about our Year 1/2 phase please do not hesitate to make an appointment with our phase leader Mrs Reynolds.
