Excellence, Aspiration, Inclusion, Respect

At Brixworth Primary School, learning is planned in a cross-curricular way ensuring that children can make connections between English and other areas of the curriculum. Lessons are designed to challenge all pupils throughout with many opportunities for teachers and students to assess the learning taking place.

Details of Home Learning

Year 5/6 homework expectations are as follows:

Spellings - Weekly spelling tests for all children (spellings sent home the week before) – Fridays

Reading - Daily home reading recorded in home/school message books.

Weekly practice on Timestables Rockstar

All children have a list of 15 activities. These activities will give children a range of different life lessons including being outdoors, therefore allowing them to experience the wonders of nature and giving them the chance to explore, face challenges and learn from these. Here they develop their whole self, supporting our vision of ‘Being the best that you can be’. It is our hope that these activities will continue to give children the positive experiences of the outdoors combined with academic activities too. Where families have more than one child in the school, it is hoped the family will enjoy doing the activities together. Children are to choose 10 activities to complete over each term. Also, there is an option for a family choice of activity and a child choice of activity. Children’s home learning books only need to be handed in on 3 occasions each term. These dates will be communicated to parents at the start of each term.

*Year 5 children will also have the opportunity to go swimming on Friday afternoons at some point in the year.

Please ensure that children have a suitable PE kit at all times and that they remove all jewellery for these lessons.  We expect all children to be able to remove their own jewellery (including earrings) by themselves and long hair must be tied up.

SATs are taken by year 6 children in May every year. In the lead up to this, year 6 children will be given CGP revision guides (Maths and Grammar) which will replace Home Learning after Christmas. Pages to complete will be set weekly. There is a SATs information evening for parents taking place in January which will explain this further.

Key information:

Each class will hold an assembly once throughout the year. The assembly will take place 9.10-9.30am approx. Parents are invited to come in and watch the assembly and are also given the opportunity to attend an open morning for their child's year group during the year. These dates are published in Primary Word at the beginning of each year.

After SATs, the year 6 children go on a 5 day residential to Whitemoor Lakes. This is a fantastic week enjoyed by all.

In Summer, year 6 children will be preparing for their leaver’s production in recognition of their time at Brixworth Primary School. This will be an incredibly enjoyable and fun-filled way to end their final primary school year.

Parents can support their children's learning through reading and discussing the books daily, and by giving children the opportunity to visit the local library to read about and research our topics.

If you would like to discuss how you can help your child at home, please see your child's class teacher. We welcome parental involvement in the life of our school.

If you have any questions about our years 5/6 phase please do not hesitate to make an appointment with our phase leader Miss Stockbridge.
